How to Prove a 1965 Pontiac Le Mans Is a GTO?

From 1964 to 1965, and again from 1972 to 1974, the Pontiac GTO was an option on the Le Mans line of vehicles. For an additional price at the dealership, you could order the GTO option for your Le Mans, which included an upgraded engine package and GTO identification badges. You can prove that your 1965 Le Mans is a GTO by looking at the physical characteristics of the car, as well as reading the vehicle identification plate.

Instructions

        1

Look around the body and interior of your 1965 Pontiac GTO. Pontiac placed multiple badges, or vehicle emblems, around the vehicle to identify to the buyer (and potential racing opponents on the street) that the Le Mans was a GTO. The driver's side front grille, rear quarter panels, interior glove box, and front fenders of the car should have a metal "GTO" emblem.
        2

Locate the vehicle identification plate (VIN) on your Pontiac GTO. You can find the VIN plate on the driver's side door jamb where the door lock meets the body. The VIN plate should start with the numbers "242" if your vehicle is a GTO. The first "2" identifies the car as a Pontiac, and the "42" identifies the car as a "GTO."
        3

Contact the Pontiac Historical Society to request a vehicle information packet on your GTO. If your 1965 Pontiac Le Mans is a GTO model, the PHS will be able to track the full history of the vehicle, including what factory built the car, where it was sold, and what options were ordered on the car. You can obtain a PHS verification packet by filling out the form located on the website. It costs, as of 2010, $65 to order the packet.
